Stuttgart will be playing their football in the Bundesliga 2 next season, after a 0-0 draw meant Union Berlin won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history.

After a 2-2 draw at Stuttgarts Mercedes-Benz Arena, Union held on for a goalless draw in the home leg to win the relegation play-off tie and make history at the club.

Union are the first team to successfully gain promotion via the play-off from the second division since Fortuna Dusseldorf back in 2012.

Manager Urch Fischer was full of praise for his side, who have brought arguably the biggest day in the clubs history, eclipsing the East German Cup win in 1968;

“The whole club did everything for this success. It was a great team performance, even if we had our problems in the first half,” Fischer said. “But I always believed we would manage it.

After missing out on automatic promotion by a single goal, Union took the difficult route to the top flight. But the players, coaching staff and fans can look forward to a season against the German elite in the 2019/20 season.
