Jaap Stam has urged his former club Manchester United to beat Barcelona to the signing of Matthijs De Ligt from Ajax.
The 19 year old centre back is one of the most sought after talents this summer after showcasing his abilities in the Eredivisie over the last few seasons.
The defender has shown immense leadership skills too, something this Manchester United side are severely lacking, the Ajax graduate has captained his side to a Champions League semi final already, losing out to a last minute Lucas Moura goal against Tottenham.
With the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly on the books, De Ligt would make a significant improvement to the squad despite his tender years.
Stam played in the Manchester United 1999 Legends game against a Bayern Munich legends side and was on top form at the back. The defender, now retired, showed exactly the kind of player he used to be at his peak and gave the United fans a taste of what they are missing in their current squad.
After the game, which United won 5-0, Stam sung the praises of his Dutch compatriot;
“He’s only a youngster as everybody knows. But in how he plays, he’s an adult, to be honest.
“He’s got composure on the ball, he’s aggressive tactically, he sees the game, he reads the game well and he’s got that driving force for himself as well in what you need to achieve and where you want to go to.
“I think that’s one of the most important thing for a player to have – to have goals for yourself, that you want to make steps, that you want to improve yourself, that you want to go the highest level.
“I think he would suit very well over here if they’re trying to pick him up and I am not sure if that’s the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.
“But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well.
