Tottenham have made a £53m bid for Real Betis maestro Giovani Lo Celso, according to reports.
The 23 year old spent a year on loan from French side Paris Saint Germain. Such was his impact in Spain the deal was made permanent in April, for a fee of around £20m.
In 45 games, Lo Celso registered 16 goals and 6 assists, despite a turbulent season under Quique Setién. He would be the first signing made by Tottenham since Lucas Moura in January of 2018, who sent Spurs to the Champions League final.
The Argentine has a release clause of £88m, but Tottenham believe the opportunity to double their money on Lo Celso will be too good for Betis to turn down.
If Spurs can get Lo Celso through the door, he would be the first signing made by the club since Lucas Moura in January of 2018, the Brazilian recently scored a hat trick to send his side to the Champions League final.
The previous record fee paid by Spurs was £36m to Dutch giants Ajax for centre back Davinson Sanchez. A move for Lo Celso would not only add the much needed quality in midfield, but send a message to the fans, Pochettino and rivals that they are capable of competing with the big clubs both on and off the pitch.
