Former Southampton player and football legend Kevin Keegan has backed current striker Danny Ings to prove his worth at Southampton and put his injury woes behind him.
The former Burnley and Bournemouth forward is set to sign for Southampton on a permanent basis after an obligatory deal was made with Liverpool after his loan spell.
The forward endured yet another tough season through injury, with a niggling hamstring keeping him on the sidelines intermittently throughout the campaign.
Despite this, the English striker managed to hit eight goals in 25 appearances as he aided the fight for survival on the south coast.
And speaking to the local paper, The Daily Echo, Keegan believes Ings can put all this behind him to become a key figure for Southampton and propel them up the table.
“He has never really had a good run at it and that’s the problem. When you play and pick up injuries, you never quite get up to match speed.”
“He is obviously a very talented player to score goals at that level because he has done it before at Liverpool. He needs a bit of luck now and a run.”
“Once he gets a run of games and starts scoring the goals, then the confidence will return and that’s what strikers really want. The more you play, the more opportunities you will get – and he will get plenty of those in that Southampton squad.”
