Gareth Bale is enduring a tough time of late and has hit out at the treatment footballers get in the modern game.

The Welsh forward has been all but frozen out at Real Madrid, with returning coach Zinedine Zidane seemingly not a fan of the former Spurs man.

Bale is linked with a move away from Real Madrid yet again this summer, with the regular rumours of a move to Manchester United and a return to Tottenham on the cards.

But Bale, who has treated Madrid to some outstanding moments in recent years, is on a colossal wage that few teams in the world can match, alongside the £80m+ Madrid would demand as a transfer fee.

Bale’s frustrations have been voiced by his agent and himself in recent weeks, and recently vented to BT Sport at the way footballers are treated ‘like robots’

“As a professional athlete, especially in a team environment, you don’t get to choose your schedule, maybe like a golf or a tennis player.

“We’re kind of just robots. We’re told where to be, when to be there, what time we have to eat, what time we have to go to the coach.

“It’s kind of like you lose your life in a way. You’re kind of just told what to do. You don’t get to choose what you want to do, when you want to do it. So yeah, I can completely understand why he said that.

“But on another point, I think a career in football’s so short, sometimes you just have to sacrifice it. Some people think it’s worth it and some people think it’s not.”
