AFCON Team Preview: Senegal

As the 32nd African Cup of Nations approaches us in less than a months time, we’ve decided to take a look at some interesting sides heading into the tournament and how we think they will fare.

In the last edition we looked at Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, and today we will preview how his teammate Sadio Mane’s nation will fare in the aforementioned Egypt this summer.

Unlike the seven time winners, Aliou Cisse’s side have never won the tournament, finishing runners-up for the only time in 2002.

Senegal will obviously be relying heavily on Mane, but they have other several high profile players across the field which could make an impact of tournament-winning proportion.

One of which has already featured on this website with an article of his own. Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the most sought after defenders and will be key to the success of Les Lions de la Téranga. The Napoli man has been subject to bids apparently around the £100m mark and yet is determined to stay under Ancelotti in Naples. A powerful defender with the ball playing ability of a world beater, he has all the attributes to be the best player at this tournament.

They also have two familiar names in the middle of the park in the forms of Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye. Both engines and machines in the middle, its hard to see anyone out running or out tackling them this year.

Aliou Cisse, having been a former international and coached the side since 2015, has an experienced head on relatively young managerial shoulders. The nation qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, only to be knocked out in the group stages after losing to Colombia, drawing with Japan and beating Poland.

This side has potential to be serious contenders in the future, but maybe this year is too soon. I think they will reach the Semi-Finals. What do you think? Let us know @RadioFtbl
